Foundations of FinTech: Exploring the Technologies Transforming Finance

The global financial landscape is undergoing a significant transformation as technology continues to reshape how we interact with money, markets, and institutions. This self-paced, four-week introductory course is part of a Professional Certificate in FinTech on edX, offered by the University of Hong Kong. It provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of the key technologies that are revolutionizing financial services. Whether you are a student exploring new career opportunities or a professional seeking to enhance your understanding of digital finance, this course offers a valuable foundation.

The course is led by Professor Siu-Ming Yiu, who serves as Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Hong Kong. He is also the Executive Director of the HKU-SCF FinTech Academy. Learners will benefit from his academic expertise as well as insights from leading industry figures. Guest speakers include Mr. Barbaros Uygun (CEO of Mox Bank), Mr. Weikai Phang (Executive Director of Digital Assets Strategic Projects at Standard Chartered Bank), and Mr. Dominic Maffei (Head of SC Ventures Hong Kong).

Throughout the course, participants will explore six transformative technologies that are shaping the future of finance. These include artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, big data analytics, blockchain, and distributed ledger technologies. Real-world applications such as robo-advisory, insurtech, green finance, and Central Bank Digital Currencies will be examined in detail. The course also addresses essential topics like cybersecurity, regulatory technology, and supervisory technology, highlighting their roles in ensuring compliance and operational resilience.
